Spa Guide: Spa Basics

Spa Basics: Everything You Need to Know About Spas

Whether you’re considering your very first spa visit or simply want to better understand the world of wellness, you’ve come to the right place. This guide explains what spas are, the different types of spa experiences, why millions of people visit them each year, and how to choose the right spa for your goals. Think of this as your Spa 101 resource – a foundation that will help you navigate everything from local day spas to luxury destination wellness retreats.

What is a Spa?

A spa is a place dedicated to relaxation, restoration, and wellbeing through treatments, therapeutic experiences, and calming environments. While many people first think of massages and facials, today’s spas can offer everything from hydrotherapy circuits and meditation classes to fitness programs, healthy cuisine, and holistic wellness experiences.

The word spa doesn’t describe one specific type of business—it encompasses a wide range of wellness experiences. Some spas are designed for a few hours of relaxation, while others encourage multi-day stays focused on health, personal growth, stress reduction, and recovery.

At its heart, a spa offers something many of us rarely make time for in everyday life: the opportunity to slow down, disconnect from daily demands, and intentionally care for our physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing. Whether you visit for an hour or a week, the goal is the same—to leave feeling better than when you arrived.

What is the difference between a day spa, resort spa, destination spa, and medical spa?

Each type of spa offers a different experience, but the biggest difference is why you’re going.

Day spas are designed for treatments without an overnight stay. They’re ideal for massages, facials, manicures, and a few hours of relaxation.

Resort spas are located within hotels or resorts. Guests enjoy spa treatments alongside pools, restaurants, golf, beaches, skiing, or other vacation activities.

Destination spas are wellness-focused retreats where the spa itself is the reason for visiting. They typically include accommodations, healthy cuisine, fitness classes, educational programming, and immersive wellness experiences over several days.

Medical spas (med spas) combine traditional spa services with physician-supervised cosmetic or medical treatments such as injectables, laser procedures, or advanced skin treatments.

The best choice depends on your goals. Looking for a relaxing afternoon? A day spa may be perfect. Planning a wellness-focused getaway? Consider a destination spa. Want luxury while on vacation? A resort spa may be the better fit.

How do I choose the right spa?

Start by asking yourself one question:

What do I need most right now?

If you’re looking to unwind after a stressful week, a local day spa may be all you need. If you’re celebrating a special occasion, a luxury resort spa can elevate your vacation. If you’re hoping to reset your lifestyle, reduce stress, or improve your wellbeing, a destination spa may provide the immersive experience you’re looking for.

Also consider:

  • Your budget
  • Travel distance
  • Desired treatments
  • Spa amenities (saunas, pools, thermal circuits)
  • Atmosphere (quiet retreat, social resort, luxury hotel, wellness immersion)

Choosing the right spa isn’t about finding the “best” spa—it’s about finding the one that’s best suited to your goals, personality, and travel style. The perfect spa for a romantic weekend may be completely different from the ideal spa for stress relief, solo travel, or a wellness reset.

Are Spas Worth the Money?

For many people, yes.

A spa experience is about far more than a massage. You’re investing in dedicated time to rest, recover, and recharge—something that’s increasingly difficult to find in everyday life.

The value often comes from the entire experience: slowing down, disconnecting from constant demands, enjoying peaceful surroundings, reducing stress, and leaving feeling physically and mentally refreshed.

Not every spa has to be a luxury splurge, either. A well-chosen day spa visit can provide tremendous value, while destination spas often bundle accommodations, meals, classes, and wellness programming into one experience.

Ultimately, whether a spa is “worth it” depends on what you’re hoping to gain. If you’re expecting only a massage, the value may seem limited. But if you view the experience as an opportunity to unplug, reset, and invest in your wellbeing, the benefits often extend far beyond the treatment itself.

How Often Should You Go to the Spa?

There’s no perfect schedule.

Some people visit a day spa every month as part of their self-care routine. Others plan one or two resort or destination spa trips each year as an opportunity to fully recharge.

Rather than focusing on a specific number, think about your needs. During stressful seasons of life, you may benefit from more frequent visits. Other times, occasional spa experiences may be enough.

Rather than focusing on a specific number, think about your lifestyle and your needs. During stressful seasons of life, you may benefit from more frequent visits. Other times, an occasional spa day or annual wellness retreat may be exactly what you need.

The goal isn’t to escape everyday life. It’s to create regular opportunities to recharge so you can return to everyday life feeling healthier, calmer, and more resilient.

How do I prepare for a spa day?

A little preparation helps you get the most from your visit.

Drink plenty of water beforehand, eat a light meal a couple of hours before your treatment, and avoid rushing to your appointment. If possible, keep the rest of your day relatively open so you’re not immediately jumping back into stressful obligations afterward.

If the spa has amenities, consider arriving 30–60 minutes early to enjoy any available amenities like saunas, steam rooms, whirlpools, or relaxation lounges.

The more relaxed you are before your treatment begins, the more you’ll get out of the experience.
